“It’s my goal to continue helping kids fall in love with learning”

Jul 26, 2024
In high school, Ivy began to feel the weight of life on her shoulders. Having parents that immigrated from Vietnam, Ivy wanted to show her mother that her efforts to move to Canada were worth it by keeping her grades up, working summers, volunteering to gain skills and helping her siblings. In 2020, life gave Ivy’s family a curve ball by compromising her mother’s health and ability to work, followed by their apartment flooding — depleting the family’s savings and leaving Ivy with no choice but to put her education lower on her priority list.
"My responsibilities at home, although tough, have never stopped me from being the best person I can be for my community and academics."

- Ivy Ngo, 2023 TELUS Student Bursary recipient

Ivy takes pride in working hard on her academics — and it shows with her making the honour roll every semester and winning many awards like the Outstanding Graduate Award in high school. As the president of both her high school’s Green Thumb Society and Science Club, Ivy challenged herself to find fun ways for students to get involved and learn. So naturally, it made sense when she decided to pursue education for a career.
"After years of working with children through volunteering and tutoring, I realized that teaching was something I wanted to do professionally, for all my life. It’s my goal to continue helping kids fall in love with learning, and to support children to the best of my abilities."
